공간잇기 지역.사람.이야기 연구소(이하 공간잇기)는 도시연구자 서준원 박사가 설립한, 도시와 사람, 기억과 공간을 이야기로 연결하는 연구소입니다.
우리가 살아가는 도시는 단지 물리적 구조물이 아닙니다. 시간이 흐르며 생명력을 얻고, 사람들의 이야기가 켜켜이 쌓이며,그곳은 기억과 감정이 살아 있는 장소로 다시 태어납니다. 공간잇기는 바로 이러한 관점에서 도시를 바라봅니다.
2013년, ‘제대로 알고 제대로 비우자’는 철학 아래 <알음비움 탐구소>라는 이름으로 첫 걸음을 내딛은 이 연구소는, 이후 공간의 기억과 감정을 연결하는 다양한 연구와 실천을 통해 오늘날 <공간잇기 지역.사람.이야기 연구소>라는 이름 아래 지역과 사람, 그리고 이야기를 잇는 창의적 활동을 이어오고 있습니다.
우리는 학술, 연구, 전시 기획, 공공디자인, 예술 교육, 출판 활동 등 분야의 경계를 넘나들며 “학문을 넘어, 이야기로 엮다”를 모토로 연구의 끝에서 창작의 시작을 발견하고자 합니다.
Gongganikki, Creative Research Lab for Land, People and Stories is a creative research lab founded by urban scholar Dr. SUH, Joon Won, dedicated to connecting cities, people, memories, and spaces through stories.
We believe that a city is more than its physical structure. As time flows, space gains vitality. As people leave traces of their lives, a place becomes layered with memories and emotions— and is reborn as a living landscape of meaning. This is the lens through which Gongganikki views the urban world.
In 2013, we began our journey under the name Areumbiwoom Lab, inspired by the philosophy: “Transcending scholarship, weaving through stories”
Since then, we have explored the emotional and narrative dimensions of space through research, fieldwork, and creative practices. Today, under the name Gongganikki Creative Lab for Land. People. Stories, we continue to cultivate work that connects localities, communities, and narratives.

서준원 박사는 도시와 사람, 그리고 그 사이의 일상경관(Ordinary Landscapes)을 이야기로 엮어내는 연구자입니다.
미국 파슨스 스쿨 오브 디자인(Parsons School of Design)에서 인테리어 디자인을 전공하며 ‘거주 공간’에 대한 관심을 키웠고, 서울대학교 환경대학원에서 환경조경학 석사과정을 밟으며 한국 도시의 고유한 장소성과 주거 환경 사이의 관계에 대한 문제의식 을 품게 되었습니다.
석사 졸업 후, 그는 서울 북촌 한옥마을을 무대로 지역 주민들과 함께하는 실천 기반의 현상연구를 독창적인 방식으로 시작했습 니다.
역사적 장소에 깃든 기억과 감정, 정서적 풍경을 주민의 언어로 수 집하고 시각화하는 이 연구는, 도시를 삶의 이야기로 해석하려는 그의 연구 철학의 시발점이 되었습니다.
이후에도 북촌을 중심으로 다양한 세대와 공동체가 참여하는 이야 기지도 프로젝트, 기억 아카이빙, 감정 기반 도시 리서치를 이어 가며 연구와 창작, 실천이 만나는 경계를 확장해왔습니다.
서울대학교 대학원 협동과정 조경학전공으로 박사학위를 취득한 그는 도시·공간·기억·사람을 잇는 학제적 연구를 지속하고 있으며,스토리 기반의 경관 이해를 위한 개념, <스토리스케이프(Storysca pe)>를 최초로 제안하기도 했습니다.
서준원 박사의 연구는 단지 과거를 기록하는 작업을 넘어, 우리가 머무는 장소와 더 깊이 관계 맺고, 공동체와 함께 기억을 새롭게 그 려보는 실천이기도 합니다.

Dr. Joon Won Suh is an urban scholar who weaves together cities, people, and the ordinary landscapes in between through the language of stories.
She first cultivated her interest in inhabited spaces while studying Interior Design at Parsons School of Design in New York.
Later, during her Master’s studies in Environmental Landscape Architecture at Seoul National University, she began exploring the deep connection between Korea’s unique urban identity and its residential environments.
Upon completing her degree, she turned her attention to Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul— not as a tourist site, but as a living archive of memory and emotion. There, she initiated a practice-based, phenomenological research project with local residents, documenting and visualizing everyday stories, feelings, and landscapes embedded in place. This experience became the seedbed of her enduring research philosophy: that cities are not merely planned, but lived and narrated.
Since then, she has expanded her work through collaborative story map projects, memory archiving initiatives, and emotion-based urban research centered on Bukchon and beyond— blurring the boundaries between research, practice, and creation.
She later earned her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture at Seoul National University, where she formalized her cross-disciplinary approach to urban memory, space, and community.
Most notably, she introduced the concept of the “Storyscape”— a theoretical and interpretive framework for understanding landscapes not as static forms, but as living terrains of memory, narrative, and emotion.
Her work is not only an act of documentation, but a creative and communal practice of remembering, relating, and reimagining place.
